A large number of local authorities have responded to Sir Michaels recent consultation exercise, and many of these have been placed on the submissions area of the Inquiry's website. Sir Michael also wrote to English Chief Executives on 20 January asking for their help in developing a clearer picture of the future role and functions of local government, and in particular by drawing on their understanding of what the public wants from their council. He encouraged councils to engage directly with their local communities and assist in providing him with information on some issues central to his remit.

In relation to direct community engagement, he was keen to hear about existing work being carried out by councils relating to the role of local government or other issues of relevance to the Inquiry and invited offers of community consultation relating specifically to the Inquirys remit. A number of these have already been received by the Inquiry.

A presentation of questions for use in public engagement exercises and designed by the Inquiry team is available on the Lyons Inquiry website and has been sent to many councils on request. Members of the Inquiry team will be attending public engagement events that have been set up by a variety of councils over the next few months based on these questions.

The Inquiry is also carrying out some more in depth analysis of stakeholder views and attitudes, council services, partnership working and best practice. This is taking place with the following councils (one council in each English region):

This analysis is now well under way with work either due to start shortly or already taking place. The focus will be varied but is likely to include desk based research, structured interviews and further public engagement events.
